Today our kids wanted tacos for dinner. We’ve always bought our taco seasoning mix at the grocery store, but on our journey to becoming self-sufficient I wanted to make something I’d always have on hand.
We are in the process of listing our house for sale, so unfortunately I didn’t pay enough attention to my herb garden this year and it failed miserably. I can’t wait for our big move to the east coast. I’m already planning a massive herb garden. Next year, we will have all the spices that we can grow available to make various mixes including this taco seasoning mix.
I found this amazing mix recipe on allrecipes.com and just made 4x the amount. Everything I needed I had on hand already except for onion powder which my husband graciously went to the store for. I didn’t alter anything other than the amount of cumin and the total amount made. And let me tell you, it tastes better than the stuff you can buy at the store.
To be honest, next time I will mix much more. This time I made 4x the recipe and it filled about 1 and 1/3 mini 4 oz. ball jars. Next time I will make enough to fill a pint jar which should last us a good part of the year.
NOTE: I added just a regular spoonful of flour to the beef/spice mixture. You can also use a bit of cornstarch instead of flour if you desire.
